System requirements and distribution

PeakTrace requires macOS 14 or later. The direct edition is provided as an Apple-notarized installer and uses Sparkle for update checks; the Mac App Store edition is installed and updated through the store. Some battery metrics appear only on Macs with a built-in battery.

Edition differences

The direct edition includes application rankings, process diagnostics, Force Quit, CPU temperature, and Release Memory; the Mac App Store edition provides whole-system metrics, trends, peak events, notifications, and menu bar customization. Both editions can be installed and used directly.

Peak notifications do not appear

First confirm that your edition includes peak notifications and that the feature is enabled in PeakTrace, then allow notifications under System Settings > Notifications > PeakTrace. A notification is sent only for a new peak event that reaches the configured threshold.

A process is missing or Force Quit fails

Application rankings, process diagnostics, and Force Quit are available only in the direct edition. macOS may refuse access to protected processes and processes owned by other users, and PeakTrace does not bypass system permissions. Force Quit is not performed again after the target has exited.

Release Memory fails

This feature is available only in the direct edition. macOS displays an administrator authorization dialog after you invoke it. PeakTrace reports failure if authorization is canceled, credentials are invalid, or the system refuses execution. The action only clears file caches that macOS considers reclaimable and does not terminate applications.

A metric is temporarily unavailable

Individual metrics may be unavailable during system sleep, a network interface change, on a Mac without a built-in battery, when temperature reading is unsupported, or when macOS temporarily refuses a system API. PeakTrace resumes reading on later samples after normal system conditions return and does not upload diagnostic data.

What to include with a report

Provide only the information needed to investigate the issue. Do not send passwords, Apple ID details, document contents, or other sensitive information.
